About Tarot

Tarot is a form of divination based upon a deck of 78 cards. The cards are divided into two groups: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana are made up of 22 cards that depict the story of the soul's journey to enlightenment. They are numbered 0-21 and represent strong energy that is surrounding the situation.

The Minor Arcana are similar to a regular deck of playing cards with a few extra court or royals added in. There are a total of 56 cards in the Minor Arcana and they represent people in your life and energies that are around you and your situation. The Minor Arcana is made up of four suits that have an elemental association. Though there are some variations - the standard suit/element correspondences with those found in playing cards are shown below:

Earth/Pentacles/Clubs

Air-Wind/Swords/Spades

Fire/Wands/Diamonds

Cups/Water/Hearts

Element Earth

Element Wind - Air

Element Fire

Element Water

The element Earth is typically represented by the suit of Pentacles or Coins. This suit is primarily concerned with tangible things; your home, work, health, and finances.   The element Wind or Air is usually represented by the suit of Swords. This suit is where you find many of life's difficulties as well as issues surrounding, intellect, logic and communication.   Fire represents passion and action. Fire is typically depicted in the suit of Wands. Here we see the seeds of creativity, entrepreneurism, and attraction.   Water is usually shown as the suit of cups or chalices. This element represents our emotions and intuition. Here we find issues of friendship, love, family, our intuitive instincts and emotional well-being.

The cards are filled with symbolism, numerology, and astrogical associations. Readings can vary from a single card to the whole deck. The meaning is derived from the placement of the cards as well as the cards themselves. Tarot is designed to allow the cards to work together, to modify and enhance, or to temper the meanings of other cards. Tarot Island readings draw from the depth of knowledge about Tarot that has accumulated over the years as well as the reader's own intuitive response to the cards.
